Finally a Spine from Down Under

I will just say that this is exactely the problem the US is infected with - "mushy multiculturalism." I think that if we return back to calling things as they are we are bound to grow as a nation. Imagine a father telling his child: "you are not misbehaving, you are just displaying age appropriate behavior that misses the mark for adequate role modeling." God forbid we tell that kid is a brat.

I think that in Austrailia they are finally calling it what it is.

Ultimatum to Muslims

By MALCOLM FARR

February 24, 2006

PETER Costello last night condemned "mushy multiculturalism" and told Muslims who could not tolerate others to leave Australia.

The Treasurer said the citizenship pledge of loyalty and respect for law should be a "big flashing warning sign" for those Muslims.

Mr Costello departed from economic matters to address Muslim protests following the publication of cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed.

He said those offended "must recognise this does not justify violence against newspapers, or countries that allow newspapers to publish them".

His comment reinforced the stand of Prime Minister John Howard, who this week criticised Muslims who were "utterly antagonistic to our society".

Mr Costello said Australia was a secular nation and law was set by Parliament under the Constitution.

"There are countries that apply religious or sharia law – Saudi Arabia and Iran come to mind," Mr Costello told the Sydney Institute.

"If a person wants to live under sharia law these are countries where they might feel at ease. But not Australia."

Found in Translation? : Lectura romana in primum Sententiarum Petri Lombardi

From Thomistica.NET

The Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies is proud to announce the publication of a previously lost work of Thomas Aquinas: the Lectura romana in primum Sententiarum Petri Lombardi, edited by Leonard E. Boyle, OP and John F. Boyle.

Ptolomeo of Lucca, the friend, confessor, and biographer of Aquinas, uniquely reported that Thomas, while in Rome, had written a second commentary on Book I of Peter Lombard’s Liber sententiarum. The Lectura romana is that commentary. It is a reportatio of Aquinas’ lectures on Peter Lombard given in Rome in 1265–1266. LecturaRomana.pngAn entirely new commentary, the Lectura romana contains a prolog, ninety-seven articles covering distinctions 1–17 and 23, and three short notes on distinctions 3 and 24. These lectures cover the nature of sacra doctrina, the names and attributes of God, the Trinity, and charity.

The Roman Province of the Order of Preachers had established a new studium at Rome in which Thomas would teach his fellow Dominicans beginning their theological education. The Lectura romana constituted part of his teaching in this new studium. In this work, we have the only surviving reportatio of Thomas’ teaching other than biblical commentaries. Written with the trim precision of the Summa theologiae, the Lectura romana contains questions, arguments, and examples not found elsewhere in the works of Aquinas. Because it can be precisely dated to 1265–1266, it is also particularly promising for understanding the development of Aquinas’ thought on a number of central theological topics.

The Lectura romana survives in the margins and guard folia of a thirteenth-century manuscript of the Parisian Scriptum now in Lincoln College, Oxford.

Orders from within North America may be sent to the Department of Publications. Further information about ordering, a complete description, and an excerpt from the book, are available online at www.pims.ca. The book will be distributed in Europe by Brepols Publishers later this spring.

Busting the Immigration Myths

It is interesting to note that there has been a lot of controversy regarding the proposed amnesty reform with the intent of issuing guest worker visas. The fact of the matter is that whenever the issue of immigration comes up there is a always a terse "get rid of them" reaction that prompts us to ask are we throwing out the illegal baby back out with the river water? The LA Times published an intersting piece that shows how many of these knee jerk reactions are actually more emotional than factual. The "facts" quoted in the article can be found here http://www.labor.ca.gov/panel/impactimmcaecon.pdf.
